The majority of car breakdowns on road trips are not due to pure bad luck. They occur because there was already something wrong – a belt that had seen better days, a battery on its very last legs, bad tire pressure – and nobody bothered to find out. A pre-trip car maintenance check only requires a couple of hours of your time and takes care of most of those potential problems right at the pass.
Conduct A Full Fluid Audit
Coolant is the most dangerous one to overlook. It’s easy to see how full it is in the overflow reservoir, and it’s easy to tell what kind of shape it’s in just by looking at it. Fresh coolant is bright green, orange, or pink, depending on formulation. If it’s turned brown or you can see particles in it, it’s contaminated and needs to be flushed. On a long highway trip like that, your engine is operating at higher temperatures for longer stretches than it ever does in city driving. All that heat will destroy an already tired cooling system.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air. Moisture lowers its boiling point. When you’re coming down a mountain pass riding the brakes with a fully loaded car, if you have too much moisture in your brake fluid, it will actually boil inside the lines and give you a dangerously soft pedal. If the fluid looks dark or cloudy, rather than clear to a pale yellow, have it replaced too. Then, while you’re over there, check the power steering fluid, its level, and its color, and top off the windshield washer. Make sure you’re buying bug-off windshield washer solvent, not just water; you’ll go through gallons of the stuff on a long trip.
Do A Proper Tire Inspection Before Loading The Car
Most drivers do this in the wrong order: they pack the car first, then check the tires. Nope. Do it the opposite way. Tire pressure should always be checked cold, before the vehicle has moved an inch, because the act of driving warms the air inside the tire and inflates the pressure reading. It’s also a good idea to check the tire when it hasn’t been sitting in the sun, which can also inflate the pressure.
Check all four tires against the recommended PSI listed on the door placard – not the number stamped on the tire sidewall, which is the max, not the target. Then check the spare. A spare that’s sitting at 15 PSI is dead weight.
For tread depth, you can use the penny test: insert a coin into the tread groove with the top of the coin facing down. If you can see the top of the coin, the tread is worn below the minimum safe threshold and the tire needs replacing. A proper tread depth gauge will give an exact reading, but either-or will tell you what you need to know.
Walk around each tire slowly and inspect the sidewalls. Bulges, cracks, or cuts are structural failures. A tire with those should not be out on a highway. Also inspect the wear pattern across the tread face – heavier wear on one shoulder than the other is pointing to an alignment problem. Wear across the center only suggests the tire has been running overinflated. Uneven wear patterns are worth fixing before you leave because they get worse really quickly at highway speeds.
Oh, and also, the jack and lug wrench need to be in the boot and you need to be sure you know how to use them. This is one of those things that everybody says "of course, obviously" but it’s not always checked.
Evaluate The Brakes With A Loaded Vehicle In Mind
A car with five people and a week’s worth of luggage weighs a lot more than that same car with just the driver. More weight equals longer stopping distances, more heat going into the brake system, and more pad wear. It also means the pads that seemed to work just fine for your daily commute might not be enough for a long trip.
Brake pads worn down to 3mm of remaining friction material should be replaced before you leave. Scored-up rotors make less friction and also transfer heat less efficiently, causing brake fade – the pedal goes soft on sustained braking, like on a long downhill stretch. This is one of the easy decisions in life: replace the pads and rotors now, or increase your stopping distance at 110km/h by a margin that matters.
If you’re in doubt about the brakes, this is not a job for eyeball engineering. A mechanic can pull the wheels and give you exact measurements.
Test The Battery and Electrical System Properly
Based on AAA data, battery failure causes the most roadside breakdowns – more than flat tires or fuel problems. And most battery failures are preventable because warning signs are present before the battery actually dies.
Start with the terminals. Corrosion is that white or blue-grey powder you see building up around the terminal connections. Clean it off with a wire brush and a baking soda solution, then rinse and dry. Corroded terminals create resistance that makes the battery work harder to start the engine.
For a better idea of battery health, use a multimeter. With the engine off and the car sitting for at least 30 minutes, a healthy battery should read around 12.6 volts. Start the engine and retest – the reading should climb to between 13.7 and 14.7 volts, which confirms the alternator is charging the battery correctly. A reading that stays low with the engine running means the alternator may be failing, and you don’t want to discover that 400 kilometers from the nearest town.
If the battery is more than four years old and tests borderline, replace it. The cost is trivial against the alternative.
Know When To Hand It Over To A Professional
There are checks you can do yourself in the driveway, and there are checks that require a hoist, specialized tools, and trained eyes. Suspension bushings, steering linkages, and transmission condition fall into the second category. Worn bushings and degraded steering components cause handling problems that become dangerous when the car is loaded and cornering at speed, but they’re not visible or measurable without proper equipment.

The serpentine belt is responsible for driving the alternator, the power steering pump, and the air conditioning compressor with a single, reinforced rubber loop. If it breaks, your steering will become heavy, your charging system will cut out, and your engine will overheat in rapid succession.
To check the belt, look for fraying along its edges, cracks across its ribs, or teeth missing from the inner surface. Any of these is a sure sign the belt is worn out. If the belt is the original and the car has passed the 100,000-kilometer mark, you should replace it, no questions asked.
The radiator and coolant hoses warrant the same sort of attention. With the engine cold, squeeze each hose along its length. A healthy hose will feel somewhat firm and flexible. A hose that is overly squishy or excessively hard is either going or gone. Cracks near the hose clamp are common and easy to overlook unless you are looking for them specifically. Check The Cabin Environment For Driver Fatigue
Driver exhaustion contributes significantly to long-distance traffic collisions, and the conditions in the cabin are even more influential than many people realize. When a car feels overly warm inside because the A/C system is not functioning properly, the driver starts to perspire – and become tired regardless of the elapsed time or the distance covered.
For best results, verify that your A/C is in good working order well before you plan to hit the road. This should involve more than simply turning it on to its lowest setting and feeling if the air is cooler; running the system for about 10 minutes should give you a fairly good idea if it’s cooling the air to a level that is significantly cooler than the cabin. Then if you feel comfortable doing so, hold your hand against the outlet. If the air from the vents isn’t appreciably cold, the refrigerant may be low, or a problem may exist in the compressor (or a number of other parts of the system). If the refrigerant is low, remember that leaks rarely fix themselves – and that many service providers can’t be bothered to do more than top your system up.
While you’re at it, swap out the cabin air filter if it hasn’t been changed in the last 15,000 to 20,000 kilometers. A blocked filter restricts airflow through the cabin, reduces the A/C’s effectiveness, and circulates dust and allergens that increase fatigue over a long drive. It’s a cheap part and takes about five minutes to replace on most vehicles.
Pack A Roadside Kit That Actually Covers The Gaps
Even if you’ve meticulously maintained your vehicle, weird things can happen on an extended drive. Roadside assistance can be slow and, in remote areas, non-existent.
A functional emergency kit includes jumper cables, a reflective warning triangle, a flashlight with spare batteries, a basic tool kit, a tire inflator that runs off the 12V socket, a first-aid kit, and enough water for every person in the vehicle – at least two liters per person beyond your normal intake. Also, if you’re heading through areas with unreliable mobile phone coverage, throw in a printed map of the route.
It’s not much good if it’s packed in the bottom under the suitcases. Keep it where you can get to it.
The easiest way to get lucky? Prevent the problems that make you need it. A few minutes checking the stuff most drivers never look at because the car was running last time can make the difference between arriving in time for sunset or missing the whole view.
